A leaking pipe under the sink: what determines the repair?
How should a leaking pipe or joint under a sink be assessed before choosing a repair? The first distinction is whether it’s a pressurized water supply or a drain, followed by the pipe material and the type of connection.
PTFE thread-seal tape is intended for suitable threaded joints, not as an outside patch; Oatey’s application guidance describes wrapping the male threads. Purpose-made repair wraps are different products and need their own suitability checks. Epoxy putties also have limits: Oatey’s Fix-It Stick product information specifically excludes pressure-pipe repair. That limitation shouldn’t be assumed to describe every product, but it shows why “epoxy putty” alone isn’t enough information.
A stopped drip doesn’t establish that a patch is a reliable repair. If the source or suitable repair is uncertain, isolate the water supply if safely accessible and have a plumber identify the failed component. What details about the pipe and connection are most useful when arranging that assessment?

The connection type matters as much as the tape name. Don’t assume a sealant suitable for threaded joints belongs on a connection that seals with a washer or another fitting component. The failed part and the manufacturer’s repair requirements need to be identified first; adding an exterior patch doesn’t resolve that uncertainty.
