what if plumbers didn't need official paperwork to work?

I was just thinking about this earlier today... imagine if plumbers didn't have to get any kind of official certification or paperwork to do their jobs. Like, anyone could just pick up a wrench and start fixing pipes or installing water heaters. On one hand, maybe it'd be easier and cheaper to find someone quick when your sink starts leaking at 2 am (been there, done that, not fun). But on the other hand, um, would you really trust some random person with zero proof they know what they're doing messing around with your home's plumbing? I mean, water damage is no jokeβ€”my cousin had a basement flood once because of a badly installed pipe, and it cost him thousands.

Just curious how people here would feel about that kind of scenario. Would you be cool with hiring someone without any official credentials if they seemed knowledgeable enough? Or would you rather stick with someone who's got the proper paperwork even if it costs more or takes longer to schedule?
