Tried closing off a couple vents after reading about it online—same deal, just made things noisier and didn’t fix the uneven temps. Here’s what actually moved the needle for me:

- Checked for gaps around windows (old house, lots of drafts)
- Used those cheap foam outlet insulators—surprisingly helps
- Got a programmable thermostat to keep things steady

Not convinced the vent trick does much unless you’ve got some super old system. Drafts and airflow seem to matter way more than which vents are open or shut, at least in my place.

Yeah, I tried the whole “close the vents in unused rooms” thing too—just made the furnace sound like it was about to take off, and didn’t help the cold spots. My house is from the 60s, so not ancient, but definitely not airtight either. Did you mess with your attic insulation at all? I keep hearing that’s a game changer for uneven temps, but I’m skeptical if it’s worth crawling around up there...

Attic insulation actually made a bigger difference than I expected, but it was a pain getting up there. Not magic, but the temp swings got less wild. If you’ve got gaps or thin spots, it’s probably worth the hassle—just wear a mask, that stuff’s nasty.

Yeah, crawling around up there is no picnic. I did mine last fall—ended up looking like a powdered donut from all the blown-in cellulose dust. But honestly, the difference was wild. Used to have this weird draft right over the couch, and now it’s just... gone. I will say, if you’ve got recessed lights poking into the attic, check those too. I found a couple basically acting like little chimneys for my heat. Sealing those up made a bigger dent than I expected.

That’s a good call on the recessed lights. I learned the hard way—thought I was clever just piling insulation over everything, but turns out some of those older cans aren’t rated for direct contact with insulation. Had to double back and put in covers so I didn’t risk a fire. Not the cheapest fix, but peace of mind is worth it. And yeah, that cellulose dust gets everywhere... I’m still finding it in weird places months later.
