Found a damper so rusted I was scared to even touch it.
Been there—sometimes I wonder if those old dampers are actually doing anything or just hanging out, collecting dust and rust. Did you ever try adjusting it, or just leave it alone? I always get nervous messing with stuff that’s been untouched for decades. And about blocking vents, yeah, I learned the hard way too... condensation, weird drafts, the works. Makes me question if those magnetic covers are even worth it or just a band-aid. Anyone actually had luck with those?
Tried those magnetic covers once—looked good for about a week, then I started getting weird noises and cold spots. Ended up just making the airflow worse. Honestly, nothing beats tracking down the actual damper and seeing if it even moves... sometimes they’re just frozen in place.
I get what you’re saying about the dampers, but sometimes those things are buried so deep in the ductwork it’s a pain to even find them. I’ve had better luck just balancing the registers themselves—like, partially closing the ones in the hot rooms and leaving the cold ones wide open. Not perfect, but it’s less hassle than crawling around in the attic or basement. Magnetic covers never worked for me either... just made the vents whistle.

Yeah, I hear you on that. Those inline dampers are a nightmare to access once everything’s sealed up—half the time you’re guessing if you even found the right one. Tweaking registers does help a bit, but it’s really just masking bigger airflow issues most of the time. Seen folks tape cardboard behind vents too... usually ends up rattling or blocking too much air. Honestly, unless you’re ready to tear into ductwork, register balancing is about as good as it gets for DIY fixes.
Had a customer once who tried the cardboard trick—ended up with a vent whistling like a tea kettle every time the furnace kicked on. Register balancing does help a bit, but yeah, it’s really just a band-aid if the ductwork’s not sized right. Sometimes you can tweak things enough to make it livable, but it’s rarely perfect.
