Funny you mention ductwork—I’ve seen folks spend a fortune on smart thermostats, but then find out half their conditioned air is leaking out before it even hits the room. I’m with you on the basics making a huge difference. Did you ever try using a thermal camera or even just the old tissue test to check for drafts after sealing everything up? Sometimes those little tricks catch stuff you’d never expect.

I’ve actually used both, and honestly, the tissue test still surprises me with what it catches. I picked up a thermal camera a couple years back thinking it’d be the “high-tech” solution, but sometimes the basics just work better. In one of my older properties, I thought we’d sealed everything tight, but the tissue fluttered near an outlet on an exterior wall—turns out there was a gap in the insulation no one had noticed.

I always remind folks not to overlook return vents either. People block them with furniture or rugs, and then wonder why one room is freezing while another’s roasting. Also, sealing up ductwork is great, but I’m careful about using the right materials—some folks go wild with duct tape, but it dries out and fails pretty quick. Mastic sealant’s messier but worth it in the long run.

It’s easy to get caught up in gadgets, but like you said, if half your air’s leaking out, that smart thermostat’s just spinning its wheels.

I get where you’re coming from with the tissue test—sometimes the simplest tricks do the job. But I’ve gotta push back a bit on the “basics work better” angle. In my experience, thermal cameras aren’t just about finding drafts; they’re about seeing the whole picture. Sure, a tissue will flutter if there’s a breeze, but it won’t tell you about cold spots from missing insulation inside a wall or ceiling. I’ve seen plenty of cases where the air wasn’t moving, but the camera picked up a big temp difference that led us to a hidden problem.

And about duct tape vs. mastic—totally agree, duct tape’s a joke for HVAC. But I’d add that even with perfect sealing, if your system’s not balanced, you’ll still get those “sauna vs. igloo” rooms. Sometimes it’s not leaks, it’s just bad design or a clogged filter somewhere upstream. People chase drafts and miss the bigger airflow issues. Just my two cents...

You nailed it about the thermal cameras—those things can spot issues you’d never find with a tissue or even a smoke pencil. I’ve seen insulation gaps behind drywall that looked totally fine from the outside, but the camera lit up like a Christmas tree. And yeah, balancing is its own beast. Even with all the leaks sealed, if the system’s not distributing air right, you’re just moving the problem around. Sometimes I wish more folks realized it’s not always about drafts... sometimes it’s just a filter that’s way overdue for a change.

Honestly, people underestimate how much a dirty filter can mess things up. I’ve walked into houses where folks spent a fortune chasing down drafts and leaks, but their filter looked like it hadn’t been touched since the Clinton era. Doesn’t matter how well you seal everything if the system’s choking for air. And balancing—yeah, that’s a whole other headache. Sometimes it’s just a damper stuck half-shut or someone closed a vent to “save energy” and now one room’s roasting while another’s freezing. It’s rarely just one thing.
