Towels under the doors are underrated, honestly. Tried those “draft stoppers” they sell online and they just slid around like socks on a hardwood floor. I’ve also debated putting plastic film on the windows, but I get paranoid about sealing things up too tight—does anyone else worry about fresh air vs. saving heat? Or am I just overthinking it…

- Seen a lot of tenants do the towel trick—works better than half the “solutions” you can buy.
- Plastic film on windows is solid for drafts, but yeah, you want a little airflow or you’ll get condensation and sometimes even mold. I usually leave one window cracked just a hair, especially in older places.
- If you’re worried about air, try weatherstripping instead of full-on sealing. It’s less claustrophobic and you can peel it off if you need.
- Honestly, you’re not overthinking it. Balancing heat and fresh air is a real thing, especially in older buildings. I’ve had folks tape up every crack and then complain about the place feeling stuffy... there’s a sweet spot.

You’re right to be cautious. I’ve seen people seal up everything and end up with damp walls or musty smells. A little draft isn’t the enemy—better than breathing stale air all winter. Trust your gut here.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve walked into a unit where someone tried to “winterize” by taping up every vent and window crack, only to call me a month later about peeling paint or that funky smell creeping in. It’s tempting to chase perfect warmth, but older places just aren’t airtight for a reason. You block every draft and suddenly you’re fighting mold or condensation on the windows.

I get wanting to save on heating bills, but honestly, a little airflow is worth it. I’d rather deal with a chilly corner than have to rip out drywall because of hidden moisture. If you’re worried about cold spots, try heavy curtains or draft stoppers—just don’t seal things up like a submarine. Trust me, the cost of fixing damp damage is way worse than wearing an extra sweater.

Had a call last winter where someone had gone full submarine mode—plastic over every vent, duct tape on the windows, even stuffed socks in the bathroom fan. They were thrilled with their “energy savings” until the ceiling started dripping.

Couldn’t agree more. A little draft beats peeling paint and that mystery mildew smell any day. Heavy curtains and a decent door snake go a long way without turning your place into a greenhouse.
