"Between filters clogging and tenants accidentally dumping stuff down drains they shouldn't (you'd be amazed...)"

Haha, trust me, nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to plumbing mishaps. I've seen things pulled out of drains that defy explanation. Anyway, the vinegar trick can help a bit with algae buildup, but honestly, regular cleaning and good screens are usually enough. Curious though, has anyone tried those mosquito dunks in their barrels? Any issues with plants or pets afterward?

I've actually seen mosquito dunks used a couple times in rain barrels—seemed harmless enough for the plants, at least from what I could tell. Pets didn't seem bothered either, but honestly, I'm still kinda skeptical about how effective they really are long-term. Had one customer swear by goldfish instead...claimed they'd eat mosquito larvae and algae. Not sure I'd recommend turning your rain barrel into an aquarium, but hey, has anyone else heard of that trick working?

I've heard of the goldfish trick too, but honestly, seems like more hassle than it's worth—feeding them, keeping the water clean enough... Has anyone tried just using fine mesh screens instead to keep mosquitoes out? Curious if that's simpler long-term.

I've used fine mesh screens for my rain barrels, and honestly, they're pretty low-maintenance. Just check occasionally for debris buildup. Definitely simpler than fish-sitting... unless you secretly want pets in your plumbing system.

Mesh is convenient, but honestly, mosquitoes always seem to find a way... had to upgrade to mosquito dunks after a few sneaky larvae showed up. Still easier than fish, though—at least dunks don't need feeding.
