Grease around the outlet baffle
When grease or debris is found around a grease trap’s outlet baffle, what’s generally safe to lift away during routine cleaning without disturbing the baffle or pushing material into the outlet pipe?
I’d also like to know what would point to more than surface buildup, such as a baffle that’s loose, corroded, or obstructed. Access and construction seem to vary by trap, so should the manufacturer’s guidance determine what can be removed, and when is it better to have a plumber inspect it?

Generally, lift away only loose grease or debris you can reach without moving the baffle or pushing material toward the outlet. If buildup is stuck to the baffle, seems to block an opening, or would require pulling or scraping at the baffle, stop rather than force it; use the trap’s instructions and get a plumber to inspect if the baffle looks loose, damaged, or obstructed.
