Had a bit of a scare last night, thought I smelled gas and freaked out. Luckily, I'd bought one of those gas leak detector gadgets online. It beeped like crazy, definitely worked...anyone else tried these things? Worth trusting or nah?

Glad you're okay—gas leaks are no joke. I grabbed one of those detectors a couple years back after a similar scare. Mine went off once, and I panicked, called the gas company...turns out it was legit, tiny leak behind the stove. The tech said they're pretty reliable for catching early signs, but always best to double-check with a pro if it goes off. For the price, definitely worth the peace of mind.

Had a similar experience last winter—detector started chirping at like 2am, scared the heck outta me. Called the emergency line, and sure enough, there was a tiny leak near the furnace. Tech said it probably wouldn't have been dangerous right away, but still...better safe than sorry. Those detectors aren't foolproof, but they're pretty darn good at giving you a heads-up before things get serious. Glad yours worked out okay too.

- Totally agree, those detectors are worth every penny. Had mine go off a couple years back—turned out to be a faulty stove connection. Wasn't even smelling gas yet, but the detector caught it early.
- One thing I'd add: don't just rely on the detector alone. I make it a habit now to do a quick visual check around appliances and connections every few months. Takes like five minutes, costs nothing, and gives me peace of mind.
- Also, if you're budget-conscious like me, keep an eye out for sales or rebates from your utility company. Got my detector half-off through one of those energy-saving programs they run occasionally.
- Glad you caught yours early too...gas leaks are no joke, even the small ones.

Good advice on checking connections regularly, I started doing that after one of my tenants had a close call with a dryer hookup. Those detectors are solid, but a quick visual once-over every now and then definitely helps catch things early.
