Maybe it’s less about the sink thickness and more about making sure everything’s secured and cushioned where it counts?

That’s been my experience too—sometimes it’s all about the install. I’ve seen folks double up on those rubber gaskets or even use plumber’s putty to dampen vibration, but I wonder if anyone’s tried adding insulation around the disposal itself? Like, wrapping it with foam or something. Does that actually help, or just trap heat and make things worse?

I’ve actually tried the foam wrap trick—just some leftover pipe insulation. It did cut down on noise a bit, but I kept checking for heat buildup and never noticed any real issue. If you go that route, just make sure the air vents aren’t blocked and you’re not using anything flammable. Honestly, tightening up the mounting and using plumber’s putty made the biggest difference for me. Sometimes simple fixes do more than fancy upgrades.

I’ve seen a few disposals wrapped up with foam or even old towels, and honestly, the noise reduction is pretty noticeable if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing. I get the concern about heat, but in my experience, these units don’t really run long enough to build up much. One thing I ran into: if you use anything too thick, it can make it tricky to access the reset button or any wiring underneath. I’d probably focus more on making sure the mounting is snug and nothing’s rattling loose—sometimes it’s the little vibrations that make the most racket.

I tried the towel trick once and nearly gave myself a heart attack when I had to crawl under there to hit the reset button in the dark. Ended up with a face full of dust bunnies and a bruised ego. I agree, tightening up the mounting bolts made a bigger difference for me than any padding. Also, I swear half the noise was just a spoon rattling around that I missed... rookie mistake.

Been there with the reset button scramble—those things are always tucked in the worst spot. Honestly, I’ve found that just keeping the disposal clean and running cold water before and after use cuts down on weird noises more than any padding trick. And yeah, loose utensils are the real culprits half the time. If it’s still rattling after you tighten everything, check for any small bits stuck in the splash guard. Sometimes it’s just a rogue popcorn kernel making all that racket...
