That noise is just the blades knocking the ice around, not the end of days for your disposal.

Title: Keeping The Sink Monster Happy: Tricks For A Smoother Running Disposal

I’ve definitely fished out a few “mystery objects” that made the whole thing sound like it was chewing gravel. I do wonder if the noise gets worse as the parts wear down, though. I started running cold water for longer before and after using it, which seems to help with both smell and noise. Not sure if it’s placebo or actually doing something, but my wallet’s happier than if I had to call a plumber.

Interesting point about the cold water trick. I’ve read that running extra water can help flush things through, but I’m always a bit wary of overdoing it—feels like a waste, especially in drought-prone areas. Personally, I toss citrus peels in now and then for the smell (and compost the rest). As for noise, mine still sounds like it’s auditioning for a horror movie, no matter what I do...

Cold water does help keep grease from gumming up the works, but yeah, I get the concern about wasting water—especially if you live somewhere dry. I’ve found that short bursts (like 10-15 seconds before and after) usually do the trick without feeling wasteful. As for the noise, some disposals are just loud by design. If it’s a new thing or sounds like metal on metal, could be something stuck or a loose part. Otherwise… earplugs? Kidding, sort of.

Yeah, that “metal on metal” sound is what always makes me nervous. Had a scare once when a spoon slipped in without me noticing—thought the whole thing was about to launch through the cabinet. Turns out, even after fishing the spoon out, the noise lingered for a while. Ended up having to tighten a couple of bolts underneath and it quieted down, mostly. Sometimes I wonder if some models just vibrate more because of how the sink is mounted.

Curious—has anyone tried those rubber baffle inserts or sound-dampening mats under the sink? I’ve seen mixed reviews. I’m always on the hunt for ways to keep the “sink monster” from waking up the whole house during a midnight snack cleanup...

Definitely true—mounting makes a big difference. I put a thick recycled rubber mat under my sink and it helped with the vibration a bit, but didn’t totally kill the noise. Those baffle inserts are hit or miss. The eco-friendly ones I tried muffled things a little, but sometimes food gets stuck in them, which is annoying. At this point, I just run the disposal earlier in the evening to avoid waking anyone up... not perfect, but quieter for everyone’s sleep.
