If a garbage disposal’s motor still runs normally, how can you tell whether a worn splash guard is the main problem rather than a sign the disposal itself needs replacing?

I’m trying to separate a removable splash guard issue from an internal failure. A deteriorated guard could explain sink splashing or trapped food odors, especially if it’s no longer sitting properly around the opening. But I wouldn’t expect a new guard to fix water leaking from the disposal housing, a motor that only hums, or slow drainage caused by a restriction farther down the plumbing.

Before deciding, I’d check whether the guard is actually removable on that model and whether the disposal otherwise runs and drains normally. Any leakage from the housing, mounting connection, or bottom of the unit seems like a bigger warning sign.

Has replacing a removable guard been a worthwhile maintenance repair when the disposal is otherwise functioning? What symptoms would make full replacement the safer choice?

Had one of those "I can fix this myself" moments today and it actually worked out, lol. My garbage disposal was sounding sluggish and kinda sad lately, so I poked around online and saw someone mention throwing ice cubes down there to sharpen the blades. Honestly, sounded a bit sketchy at first, but figured what the heck, worth a shot.

So I dumped a tray of ice cubes in, flipped the switch (with water running, obviously), and after a few seconds of loud crunching noises that made me question my life choices, it started sounding way smoother. Like noticeably better. Even tossed in some lemon peels afterward for good measure - now my kitchen smells fresh too.

Feeling weirdly proud about this tiny achievement, haha. Curious if anyone else has tried something similar or has other random DIY fixes that turned out surprisingly well?

But then I stumbled across a tip online about tossing some ice cubes down there to sharpen the blades. Honestly, I was skeptical (ice cubes, really?), but figured what the heck. Gave it a whirl and, you know what, it actually worked. Disposal sounds way smoother now.
Just found out something kinda wild - apparently, some cities are now using underground vacuum tubes to suck away garbage instead of traditional garbage trucks. Like, imagine your trash just zooming away beneath your feet, Jetsons-style. Seems futuristic but it's already happening in places like Sweden and South Korea. Honestly, sounds way better than waking up at 6 am to that loud beeping truck outside my window every Tuesday. Wonder if this could catch on everywhere or if it's too pricey or complicated to set up...
