Okay, so my garbage disposal has decided to start acting possessed or something. It used to work fine, but lately when I flip the switch it makes this loud humming noise, kinda like it's trying really hard but can't quite get going. Sometimes it'll spin a bit, but it's definitely not grinding stuff up properly anymore. I've tried poking around with a wooden spoon handle (yes, power off first, I'm not that brave or dumb lol) to see if anything obvious is stuck down there, but nothing seems jammed.

Also, there's this weird metallic rattling sound every now and then when it does manage to spin. Could something have broken off inside? Or maybe the blades are dull or something? Honestly, I don't even know if that's a thing that happens...

Anyway, before I call someone out and spend money I don't have right now, figured I'd check here first. Has anyone had something similar happen? Is there an easy fix or am I looking at replacing the whole thing?

I've had my share of garbage disposal disasters (um, potato peels, anyone?), so I've kinda figured out a routine to keep things running smoothly. First thing I do every week or so is toss in some ice cubes and a bit of coarse salt, then run it for a minute. Sounds awful but it really cleans the blades. After that, I usually chuck in a lemon wedge or orange peel to freshen things up—makes the kitchen smell nice too.

Once a month-ish, I pour baking soda down there, let it sit a bit, then follow it with vinegar. It bubbles up like crazy, but it seems to clear away any funky buildup. And every now and then, I peek under the sink to check for leaks or anything weird going on.

But honestly, I'm just winging it based on random internet tips and trial-and-error. Curious if anyone else has different tricks or maybe a better routine that works for them...

Was washing dishes last night around 11pm (yeah, late-night snack cleanup, don't judge), and when I flipped on the disposal, the sound it made legit startled me. It was like a cross between grinding gravel and some kind of possessed blender. I swear my neighbor probably thinks I'm running a secret midnight construction site or something.

Anyway, got me thinking—what if it's not just a mechanical issue? What if my sink's secretly communicating with some underground goblin civilization or opening a portal to another dimension every time I toss in leftover pasta?

I tried the usual stuff—checking for spoons (none), running water (didn't help), even whispering nice words to it (um, no luck). Before I call a plumber or an exorcist, figured I'd toss this out here: anyone else have weirdly noisy disposals? Or better yet, anyone got a fun theory about what's really going on under our sinks...?

Trash bins are safer, I guess, but then there's the smell and mess factor. Curious what you guys prefer and why?
