I get the hesitation with gypsum, but it’s not totally useless outside of sodium-heavy soils.

Yeah, I hear you on that. Gypsum’s one of those things that sometimes helps, sometimes just sits there. Aerating and coarse sand have saved me in a few soggy patches too. It’s a slow fix, but worth it over time. Keeping amendments minimal is smartβ€”less mess if things don’t work out.
