Why do faucet handles turn opposite ways?

I thought I was losing my mind the first time I tried to turn on the hot water and got blasted with cold instead. Is there some secret handshake for figuring out which way is “right”? Or do we just have to memorize each faucet in the house? It’s like a weird plumbing lottery every time I move.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stood there, half-awake, just staring at a faucet and wondering if I’m about to freeze or scald myself. You’d think there’d be some universal rule, but nope—every house seems to have its own “logic.” In one of my rentals, the kitchen sink hot water was on the right, but in the bathroom it was on the left. Drove me nuts for weeks.

I’ve asked plumbers about this and they usually shrug and say it depends on who installed it and what parts they had handy. Sometimes older homes get “creative” with their plumbing over the years. I’ve even seen faucets where both handles turn the same direction for hot and cold, which just feels wrong somehow.

Honestly, I wish there was a secret handshake or at least a code. Until then, I guess we’re all just playing faucet roulette. At least you’re not alone in this—pretty sure everyone’s been blasted by surprise cold water at some point.

That’s the truth. I’ve renovated a few places and it’s wild how inconsistent things get, especially in older homes. Sometimes you open up a wall and realize someone just installed whatever was on hand, no rhyme or reason. If you want consistency, you pretty much have to redo it yourself and stick to the standard—hot on the left, cold on the right. Otherwise, it’s a guessing game every time.

Couldn’t agree more—had a similar experience in my last place. Pulled off a bathroom fixture and found the hot water line snaked over to the right for no reason at all. It’s like each previous owner had their own “system.” Drives me nuts, but you’re right: if you want it done right, gotta do it yourself and stick to standards. Otherwise, you’re stuck playing faucet roulette every time you move.

It’s wild how every house seems to have its own “logic” behind the plumbing. I always wonder if some of these folks just guessed which way the handles should turn, or maybe they just didn’t care? I get nervous messing with anything behind the wall because you never know what you’ll find—like, is that pipe even up to code? Ever had to redo something because it just felt unsafe, even if it technically worked?
