Why do faucet handles turn opposite ways?

Yeah, the muscle memory thing gets me every time—especially when I’m half-awake and just want some water. I’ve got one bathroom where both handles turn the same way, and another where it’s totally reversed. Drives me nuts. I tried swapping out the cartridges once, but the old hardware was so stubborn I just gave up and learned to live with it. Sometimes I wonder if previous owners did it on purpose just to mess with people.

I totally get where you're coming from. Old plumbing can be a real pain—sometimes it's just not worth the hassle, especially when the fittings are corroded or stuck. I've run into similar situations and, honestly, sometimes you just have to pick your battles. It’s probably not some grand scheme by previous owners, just a result of whatever parts were handy at the time. At least you know which bathroom is going to throw you off... muscle memory eventually adapts, even if it’s annoying at first.

Man, I still get tripped up by the kitchen sink at my aunt’s place. One handle turns left for hot, the other turns right for cold—makes zero sense. I tried swapping them once but the stems were so rusted I nearly snapped a wrench. Sometimes it really is just whatever parts were lying around or what fit in the moment. It’s wild how much variety there is in old houses... keeps you guessing every time you wash your hands.

Yeah, old plumbing setups can be a real puzzle. I’ve run into the same thing—sometimes you just have to live with it unless you want to tear the whole thing apart. Honestly, half the time it’s just whatever the last guy had on hand or could make work. At least you know you’re not alone in getting thrown off by weird handle directions. It’s part of the charm... or the headache, depending on the day.

That’s been my experience too. I once opened up a wall to fix a leak and found three different brands of shutoff valves all pointed in random directions. Sometimes I wonder if there’s even a “right” way, or if it’s just tradition and habit. The inconsistency drives me nuts, but tearing it all out is usually not worth the mess.
