Why do faucet handles turn opposite ways?

I totally get the frustration. We had a similar issue when we installed a water-saving faucet in our bathroom—except the handles were swapped and the eco labels wore off after a month. I tried painting tiny blue and red dots, but my partner scrubbed them off during a deep clean. Eventually, I just made a habit of testing the water every time... not ideal, but it worked until we could fix it for good. It’s wild how something so small can mess with your routine.

Yeah, those little details can really throw you off. I’ve had to label handles with tape before, but it never lasts long. It’s surprising how much time you end up wasting just figuring out hot from cold. At least you found a workaround until you could fix it—sometimes that’s all you can do without spending extra.

Drives me nuts when the hot and cold turn opposite ways—like, who decided that was a good idea? I’ve swapped out a few handles over the years, and half the time the replacement parts don’t match up either. Sharpie labels last longer than tape, but even those fade after a while. At this point, I just warn tenants: “If you get a surprise shower, blame the plumber from 1982.”

Honestly, I kind of get why they’re opposite—if you look at old plumbing diagrams, it’s all about righty-tighty/lefty-loosey and the way the valve seats were designed. Still, it’s a pain when you’re swapping parts. I’ve started buying universal handles with adapters, but even then, sometimes the stems are just... weird.

Yeah, those universal handles are supposed to make life easier, but I swear half the time the adapters don’t line up right or the splines are off by just enough to be annoying. Ever run into those old stems where you’re not even sure which way is “off”? Makes me wonder if anyone actually standardized this stuff or if it’s just chaos under the sink.
