Always worth a peek inside before buying... learned that after a “deluxe” valve seized up after barely a year.

Totally agree—those “deluxe” labels are mostly marketing. I’ve had better luck with the generic ones too, as long as you check the guts. Ever try the quarter-turn valves? I swapped to those after a similar late-night flood and they’re way easier to shut off in a hurry. Curious if you noticed any difference with plumber’s grease over time? I’ve skipped it before and regretted it when things got stuck.

Quarter-turn valves are a game changer, honestly. When our toilet started overflowing at 2am, I was so glad I’d swapped out the old twisty one for a quarter-turn—just a quick flick and the water was off. Haven’t tried plumber’s grease yet, though. I always wonder if it’s really necessary or just another thing to buy... but maybe I’ll regret skipping it down the line.

Quarter-turns really are a lifesaver when things go sideways in the middle of the night. As for plumber’s grease, I get why it seems like overkill, but it actually does help keep those valves moving smoothly over time—especially if you’re in a spot with hard water or older pipes. I’ve seen plenty of stuck valves that could’ve been saved with a dab of grease. Not saying you need to slather it on every month, but a little when you install or service the valve goes a long way.

Couldn’t agree more about quarter-turns—when you’re half-awake and ankle-deep in water, you want that valve to shut off fast, no wrestling. Grease is underrated, honestly. I’ve seen valves seize up after just a couple years, especially in older houses with mineral buildup. Doesn’t take much, just a quick dab during install or maintenance. Saves a lot of headaches down the line.

Quarter-turns are a game changer, no doubt. I learned that the hard way after a tenant called me at 2am—water everywhere, and the old multi-turn valve just spun and spun. Ended up shutting off the main, which was a pain for everyone. I’ll admit, I used to skip the grease step thinking it was overkill, but after wrestling with a stuck valve in a crawlspace last winter... never again. Now I keep a little tub of plumber’s grease in my toolbox. It’s one of those tiny things that makes a big difference over time.
