sink's spraying water everywhere—what do you grab first?

Good advice overall, but I'm wondering...is shutting off the main water valve really the best second step? As a first-time homeowner myself, I've been told repeatedly that messing with the main valve too often can cause its own issues—like leaks or valve damage. Maybe that's just paranoia from my plumber, but it stuck with me.

Wouldn't it make sense to try something temporary first, like wrapping a towel or cloth around the leak to redirect the spray into the sink or bucket while you figure out the shut-off under the sink? I know towels aren't a permanent fix, but they might buy you a minute or two to calmly locate and turn off the local valve without panicking and running straight for the main shut-off.

Also, totally agree about footwear. Learned that lesson slipping on wet tiles once...not fun.

You're spot-on about the main valve—it's definitely not something you want to mess with regularly. I've had tenants accidentally damage older valves by turning them too forcefully or frequently. Usually, your best bet is exactly what you mentioned: quickly redirect the spray with a towel or cloth, then calmly find and shut off the local valve under the sink. And yeah, wet floors are no joke...I've seen some nasty slips from panicked tenants rushing around barefoot.

Yeah, totally agree about the towel trick—saved me more than once! I remember one time I panicked and grabbed a bathmat instead of a towel...not my finest moment, haha. But you're right, staying calm makes a huge difference. And good call mentioning the slippery floors; it's easy to overlook that when water's spraying everywhere, but safety first, right? Anyway, sounds like you've handled your share of plumbing chaos too—glad I'm not alone in this!

Haha, grabbing a bathmat sounds exactly like something I'd do in a panic...been there myself. Ever thought about keeping a bucket handy under the sink? Towels are great for quick fixes, but a bucket can help catch the spray directly—less cleanup afterward. Also, anyone else forget where their shut-off valve is until it's too late? Might be worth double-checking its location every now and then, saves precious seconds when things go south.

Haha, the bathmat move is classic panic mode...been there too. But honestly, buckets under sinks can get cluttered fast—do you find it practical to keep one there all the time? I usually just grab whatever's closest (towels, shirts, even a hoodie once). Good call on the shut-off valve though; it's funny how we always think we'll remember exactly where it is until water's spraying everywhere and suddenly we're clueless. Maybe labeling it clearly would help?
