Definitely been there myself. I get what you mean—apps and YouTube are handy for the basics, but like you said, "

the minute water starts spraying somewhere it shouldn’t, I’m dialing my guy.
" That’s the line right there. I’ve had folks call me after trying to patch a pipe with duct tape and whatever they could find under the sink... sometimes it works, most times it just buys a little time before things get worse.

I always tell people, try the simple stuff if you feel comfortable, but don’t push your luck. Water’s sneaky and it’ll find a way to make a small problem a big one fast. Honestly, nothing wrong with giving it a shot, but knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing how to start. Apps are cool for reference, but when the floor’s flooding, you want a real person on speed dial.

Couldn’t agree more with “knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing how to start.” I’ve tried to fix a leaky shutoff valve before, thinking it was a quick job after watching a few tutorials. Ended up making it worse and had to call my plumber anyway. Apps are great for small stuff—like unclogging a drain or replacing a washer—but the second you’re dealing with anything behind the wall, it’s just not worth the risk. Water damage sneaks up fast and gets expensive even faster.

- Had a tenant try to “fix” a slow leak under the kitchen sink with some YouTube hack—ended up with water all over the cabinet and warped flooring.
- I’ll handle basic stuff like swapping out a faucet or clearing a trap, but anything involving soldering or pipes in the wall? That’s when I call my plumber.
- Apps are fine for quick checks or reminders, but they don’t replace experience. One wrong move and you’re looking at thousands in repairs... not worth it.
- Honestly, sometimes paying for the pro is just cheaper in the long run.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve seen “DIY” jobs go sideways more than once—sometimes those YouTube fixes just make a bigger mess. I’ll tinker with the easy stuff, but for anything more, my plumber’s worth every penny. Peace of mind is huge.

I get the appeal of just calling a pro and being done with it—especially when water’s involved. One bad move and you’re looking at a much bigger problem than you started with. But I’ll admit, I’m stubborn about trying to figure things out myself first. Maybe it’s just the satisfaction of solving a puzzle, or maybe I’m just cheap... hard to say.

Last winter, I tried to fix a leaky kitchen faucet using one of those step-by-step apps. It was actually pretty detailed, with diagrams and everything. Took me twice as long as the video said it would, and I ended up making three trips to the hardware store because I kept forgetting random washers or tools. But in the end, it worked. No leaks, no weird noises. Felt pretty good about that one.

But then there was the time I tried to snake a slow drain after watching a “simple” tutorial. Ended up cracking the pipe under the sink—turns out it was way more brittle than I thought. That repair cost way more than if I’d just called my plumber in the first place. Lesson learned (sort of).

I guess for me it comes down to risk vs. reward. If it’s something low stakes—like replacing a shower head or fixing a running toilet—I’ll give it a shot with an app or YouTube. Anything involving pipes in the wall or potential flooding? That’s when I start thinking about how much my time (and sanity) is worth.

Curious if anyone else finds those apps actually helpful for more complicated stuff? Or do they just make you feel like you’re in over your head half the time?
