I've had composting toilets in two rental cabins for about 4 years now. Maintenance isn't bad—just regular emptying and adding bulking material—but guests definitely need clear instructions. Fine for rural or off-grid setups, but probably not ideal for typical urban rentals.

You're spot-on about composting toilets needing clear instructions—seen plenty of mishaps when guests aren't properly briefed. They're great for cabins or off-grid setups, but in urban areas... I'd lean toward low-flow toilets. They're eco-friendly, user-friendly, and less prone to misuse. Plus, from a plumbing safety standpoint, fewer surprises mean fewer headaches down the road. Still, kudos for making composting work smoothly for four years; that's no small feat.

Totally agree about the clear instructions thing—I've seen some pretty awkward moments myself when guests encounter composting toilets for the first time. Had a friend who installed one at his lakeside cabin, and let's just say the first weekend with visitors was... memorable. But after he put up a simple laminated guide on the wall, things smoothed out considerably.

Low-flow toilets definitely seem like the safer bet for urban setups. They're straightforward, familiar, and still make a noticeable dent in water usage. Plus, installation-wise, they're usually a direct swap-in replacement, so no major plumbing overhaul needed.

Still, props to anyone who's managed composting toilets long-term. Four years without major issues is impressive—clearly you're doing something right. It's all about finding what fits your lifestyle and comfort level best, I guess.

Haha, yeah, I've seen similar situations. As someone who's managed rental properties, I lean toward low-flow toilets for simplicity and safety—fewer surprises for guests means fewer headaches down the line. Composting toilets are great in theory, but in practice they need consistent attention and clear instructions. For rentals or urban setups especially, it's usually safer to stick with what's familiar.

Yeah, totally get this. Had neighbors who went full composting toilet mode—worked fine for them, but every time guests stayed over, confusion (and mild panic) ensued. Low-flow seems like the safer bet for most folks...
