I've had a greywater setup running for about three years now—here's my quick take:

- Maintenance isn't terrible, but yeah, occasional filter cleaning is necessary.
- Odors aren't really an issue if your system's designed right (airflow and proper drainage).
- DIY kits exist, they're pretty straightforward if you're handy—no rocket science involved.

Honestly, the convenience outweighs the hassle for me...but your mileage might vary.

Been running a greywater system at one of my rental properties for about five years now, and I'd mostly agree with your points. Maintenance is pretty minimal, but I wouldn't downplay the filter cleaning too much—it's easy to forget, and tenants definitely won't remind you until there's an issue. Learned that the hard way... twice.

Odors haven't been a problem for me either, but I did have to tweak the drainage setup early on. DIY kits are fine if you're handy, but honestly, if you're not confident in your plumbing skills, it's worth paying someone who knows what they're doing. Seen some pretty questionable DIY attempts from friends that ended up costing more to fix later.

Overall though, I'd say sustainable plumbing upgrades like greywater systems are worth it. Saves money on water bills and tenants seem to appreciate the eco-friendly angle. Just don't underestimate the initial setup—it's straightforward, sure, but still takes some planning and patience.

I've been considering something like this for a while now, especially since water bills keep creeping up. Good to hear your experience has been mostly positive. You're definitely right about the DIY plumbing thing—my neighbor tried installing a rainwater harvesting setup himself last summer, and it turned into a weekend-long fiasco... ended up calling a professional anyway. Your advice about careful planning is noted; I think I'll research more thoroughly before diving in. Thanks for sharing the real-world perspective.

Good call on doing thorough research first—I've seen plenty of DIY plumbing projects spiral out of control. One thing I'd add is to check your local regulations carefully. Some areas have pretty strict codes about rainwater harvesting or greywater reuse systems, and you don't want to invest time and money only to find out you're not compliant. Have you looked into greywater setups at all? They're usually simpler than full rainwater systems and can still make a noticeable dent in your water bill.

Totally agree about greywater being simpler—I actually installed one last summer. Even though it was straightforward, I still ran into some unexpected hiccups. For instance, I underestimated how much lint from the washing machine could clog things up... definitely recommend adding a good filter. But overall, it's been worth it—my garden's thriving, and my water bill dropped noticeably. Just go slow and double-check everything as you go.
