Saving water in the shower actually worked for me

- Had the same thing happen when I swapped out my shower head for a low-flow one.
- Thought it’d be a 10-minute job... ended up wrestling with mineral deposits in the threads for an hour.
- Learned to use just enough Teflon tape—too much and it actually leaks more, weirdly.
- Also, flushing the supply line is key. Pulled out some gross brown sludge. No wonder the old head had zero pressure.
- One trick: snug the new head by hand first, then a quarter turn with a wrench. Keeps you from overtightening or cracking cheap fittings.
- It’s always “just one upgrade,” right? Then suddenly you’re elbows-deep in 30-year-old plumbing...

- Been there with the “quick” shower head swap—last time, I found what looked like ancient coral growing in my pipes.
- Low-flow heads are a game changer, but yeah, only if the supply line isn’t full of prehistoric gunk.
- Teflon tape is weirdly tricky. I swear I always end up redoing it at least once.
- One thing I noticed: some low-flow heads feel like a drizzle, others somehow still have decent pressure. Guess it’s all about the design.
- Not gonna lie, I miss the firehose showers sometimes... but seeing the water bill drop makes up for it.
- Also, if you haven’t tried it, vinegar soak for the old fittings works wonders on mineral buildup. Just don’t forget and leave it overnight unless you want to smell like salad dressing for a week.

I have to mildly disagree on the vinegar soak—tried it once and my fittings ended up with this weird dull finish. Maybe I left them too long?

That’s not an exaggeration... my bathroom smelled like a sub shop for days. Also, I swear Teflon tape is out to get me. No matter how careful I am, it always unravels at the last second.

- Vinegar soak: I’ve had similar issues with brass fittings getting that dull, almost chalky look after soaking too long. Seems like it strips more than just the gunk if you leave it past an hour or so. Maybe it’s just certain finishes? I usually do 30-40 minutes max and rinse right away.
- Smell: Yeah, the vinegar odor lingers forever. Tried to “air out” the bathroom with a fan and still had that tangy scent for days. Kinda makes you crave chips though, weirdly.
- Teflon tape: Totally get you on this. The stuff is supposed to be simple but it’s like it has a mind of its own. Here’s what’s helped me:
- Hold the tape taut and wrap clockwise (same direction as you’ll thread the fitting).
- Start a couple threads back from the end so you don’t get bits inside the pipe.
- Three wraps seems to be the sweet spot—any more and it starts to unravel or bunch up.
- If your hands are even a little damp, forget it... tape just shreds apart.

I’ve also switched to pipe dope on some jobs where tape just won’t cooperate. It’s messier, but at least it stays put.

On the water-saving shower thing—didn’t think I’d notice much difference, but after swapping in a low-flow head, my hot water lasts way longer. Was skeptical at first, but now I’m not racing through showers just to avoid cold water at the end.

Curious if anyone else has found certain brands of Teflon tape easier to work with? Some of the cheap stuff from hardware stores seems thinner and more annoying than others. Maybe it’s not just technique...

- I swear, Teflon tape is one of those things that looks easy on YouTube and then just laughs at you in real life. I’ve had better luck with the thicker, “professional” rolls—those cheap skinny ones are useless, honestly.
- Vinegar—yep, my bathroom smelled like a salad bar for a week after I tried cleaning the showerhead. Not sure it was worth it.
- Low-flow shower head: Didn’t expect much but it actually made a difference. Hot water lasts, and I’m not standing in a puddle by the end. Didn’t even notice the pressure drop much, which surprised me.
- Pipe dope is a mess but sometimes it’s the only thing that works. Still not convinced I’m using it right though...
