Saving water in the shower actually worked for me

I’ve definitely taken a few showerheads apart when vinegar and poking at the holes didn’t cut it, but I always make sure to turn off the water supply first—learned that one the hard way after an unexpected spray. Some models come apart easier than others, but if you’re seeing buildup inside and regular soaking isn’t working, it’s worth a shot. Just be careful not to strip any threads or lose small washers.

About those “air boost” high-efficiency heads: I tried one from a big box store last year. It did make the spray feel a bit more forceful, but honestly, it’s not quite the same as old-school pressure. Not bad, just different—kind of a softer but wider spray? Not sure if that’s what you’re after. I’d say they’re not pure hype, but they won’t magically restore ‘90s-level pressure either.

I’m always a little wary about taking things apart unless I have to... sometimes you fix one problem and end up with another. Anyone else ever have trouble getting all the seals back in place?

Getting those seals back in is always trickier than it should be. I’ve dropped those tiny rubber washers more times than I care to admit—usually they bounce somewhere impossible to reach, too. Sometimes I’ll take a quick photo before pulling things apart, just so I remember how everything’s supposed to fit back together. Doesn’t always help, but it beats guessing.

I hear you on the air boost heads. Tried one that promised “hotel pressure” and while it was fine, it just didn’t have that satisfying blast you get from the old unrestricted ones. Still, I guess if the goal’s saving water, it’s a decent trade-off.

Honestly, half the time I’m tempted to just buy a new showerhead instead of fighting with mineral buildup and fiddly parts... but then again, fixing stuff is kind of half the fun, right?

- Totally get this. Sometimes it feels like those seals are designed to escape on purpose—one bounce and they’re gone for good.
- I’ve started putting a towel in the tub or sink before I start, just to catch anything that drops. Doesn’t always work, but it’s saved me a few times.
- Air boost heads are hit or miss. The “hotel pressure” ones never quite live up to the hype for me either. There’s something about the old unrestricted flow that just feels better, even if it’s not as efficient.
- Mineral buildup is a pain. Vinegar soak helps, but if it’s really bad, sometimes replacing is less hassle than endless cleaning.
- Still, there’s a weird satisfaction in getting everything back together without leaks. Makes you feel like you earned that hot shower.

Those little seals are like Houdini, I swear. I’ve had more than one vanish into the drain before I even realized I’d dropped it. Towel trick helps, but I also started putting a small bowl over the drain just in case—learned that one after chasing a washer around with a flashlight for half an hour.

Mineral buildup’s my nemesis too. Vinegar works for light stuff, but once it gets crusty, sometimes you just have to admit defeat and swap the head. I do like trying to fix things first though—there’s something satisfying about getting it back together, turning on the water, and not seeing any leaks. Kinda feels like winning a tiny lottery.

One thing I always remind myself: shut off the water before you start. Sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget in the excitement and then you’re mopping up a mini flood. Not my proudest moment.

As for those “hotel pressure” heads—yeah, never quite as magical at home. Maybe it’s just the vacation mindset that makes them feel better?

Funny how those seals seem to have a mind of their own—I've spent more time than I'd like fishing them out with tweezers. The bowl trick is underrated, honestly. On the mineral buildup front, I’ve tried everything from vinegar soaks to those little wire brushes, but yeah, sometimes the only fix is a new showerhead. And forgetting to shut off the water? Been there... nothing like an unexpected indoor rainstorm to keep you humble.

Not sure about those hotel pressure heads either. I suspect they’re running on higher pressure than most homes are set up for, or maybe it’s just the vacation mood talking. Either way, I’ll take a leak-free, low-flow head over a “fancy” one that sprays everywhere any day.
