Ever tried the ones that shut off your main water if they sense a leak? Bit overkill for some, but man, they can save your bacon if you travel or have rental properties.
I get what you mean about the auto-shutoff systems, but honestly, I’ve seen them cause more headaches than they solve sometimes. Like, if you’ve got older pipes or a finicky valve, those things can trip over a little condensation and suddenly you’re without water until you can reset it. Not saying they’re bad—just not always the magic bullet for everyone. Sometimes just keeping an eye out and fixing drips early is less hassle in the long run.
I’ve run into that too—false alarms from a little humidity or a minor drip, and suddenly you’re crawling under the house to reset the valve. Not ideal if you’re not home much. Curious if anyone’s tried those smart leak sensors that just send alerts instead of shutting things off? Seems like a middle ground, but I haven’t seen how reliable they are in older homes.

I put a couple of those smart sensors in my 1960s ranch last year after getting tired of the “crawl under the house” routine. They’re decent—definitely less dramatic than the auto-shutoff valves, but I’ll admit, sometimes they pick up on condensation from the old pipes and ping my phone at 2am. Still, I’d rather get a false alert than have to reset the whole system every time it gets muggy. Not perfect, but better than nothing.
I hear you on the false alerts—had one of those sensors under a leaky old utility sink and it kept waking me up every time the humidity spiked. Still, I’d rather deal with a few pings than come home to a flooded basement. It’s not perfect, but it’s saved me more than once.
Had a similar thing happen with a sensor near my water heater—false alarms every time the weather turned humid. Annoying, but I get your point. The one time it actually caught a slow leak, it probably saved me hundreds in repairs. Not a perfect system, but I’ll take the hassle over a soaked floor any day. Still wish these things were better at telling the difference between real leaks and just damp air, though...
