Saving water in the shower actually worked for me

I hear you on the filter thing. I’ve tried a few brands over the years in some of my rentals, and honestly, results are all over the place. Sometimes it’s like magic, other times it’s just… meh. Hard water can be a real pain, especially if you’re in an older building. Swapping showerheads helped me too, but I still keep a squeegee handy for the glass doors—makes life a bit easier. It’d be nice if those filter companies gave more realistic expectations, for sure.

Yeah, that squeegee trick is underrated. I’ve seen folks spend a fortune on filters and fancy cleaners, but a $5 squeegee does half the job. Hard water’s a beast, though—sometimes you just gotta pick your battles. I’ve had luck with vinegar soaks for the showerhead too, if you haven’t tried that yet.

Can’t argue with the squeegee—mine’s basically glued to the shower wall at this point. For hard water, I’ve also tried rubbing a lemon half on stubborn spots. Smells better than vinegar, though I end up craving lemonade after... Worth a shot if you’re bored of cleaning sprays.

I’ve actually tried the lemon trick too, and you’re right—it does make the bathroom smell way nicer than vinegar. The only thing is, I found it left a bit of a sticky residue if I didn’t rinse it off really well. Maybe I was just using too much juice? Or maybe my water’s just extra hard. Either way, it’s a fun change from the usual chemical sprays.

On the squeegee front, I’m with you. I started using one after every shower and it’s wild how much less scrubbing I have to do now. It’s almost like the glass stays cleaner just because I’m not letting the water sit there. I used to think it was overkill, but now I get it.

Curious if you’ve noticed any difference in your water bill since you started saving water in the shower? I tried timing myself and cutting down on hot water, but honestly, I can’t say I saw a huge drop in the bill. Maybe my showers weren’t as long as I thought to begin with. Did you do anything else besides shorter showers—like switching out the showerhead or something?

Also, has anyone tried those “hard water” shower filters? I keep seeing ads for them but not sure if they’re worth the money or just another gadget that ends up in the closet.

Funny you mention the sticky lemon thing—I ran into that too. Tried it once on the sink and it looked all shiny at first, but then my kid came in with wet hands and suddenly everything felt like a lemonade stand. I think it’s just a matter of really wiping it down after, but honestly, it’s way more pleasant than that vinegar cloud that sticks around for hours.

The squeegee habit is such a game changer. I used to roll my eyes at people who swore by it, but now I get why hotel bathrooms always have them. It’s like, why fight with soap scum when you can just swipe it away before it sets? My arms are thanking me.

About the water bill—same here. I got all motivated, set a timer, did the “navy shower” thing for a while, but the bill didn’t really budge. Maybe our showers were already pretty short? Or maybe it’s just that the water heater and dishwasher are the real culprits. I did swap in one of those “eco” showerheads from the hardware store, and I *think* it helped a bit, but it’s hard to tell unless you’re super meticulous with tracking. The water pressure’s decent, though, so no regrets.

I’ve been eyeing those hard water filters too. Some folks say they’re a miracle, others say it’s snake oil. My neighbor swears her hair is softer since she put one in, but I’m not sure if that’s just wishful thinking or what. For now, I’m sticking with the squeegee and a little elbow grease.

Anyway, love hearing about other people trying these things out—it makes me feel like I’m not the only one experimenting with lemon juice and weird gadgets.
