Had a similar issue last yearβ€”kept noticing the drain was sluggish but kept putting it off (typical, right?). One heavy rainstorm later and yep, basement flood. Not fun.

Here's my two cents from experience:

- Slow draining or funky smells usually mean something's already building up down there.
- If you've got old pipes or trees near your property, roots can sneak in and clog things up big time.
- Renting one of those drain snakes from the hardware store can sometimes help clear minor blockages.
- If it's recurring regularly, might wanna bite the bullet and get a plumber to scope it out with a camera. Cost me a bit upfront, but saved a bigger headache later.

Better to handle it sooner than wading through ankle-deep water at 2 AM... trust me on that one.

Had a similar headache myself a couple years back. Thought it was just a minor clog, but turns out tree roots had invaded the main line. Renting a snake helped temporarily, but it kept coming back every few months. Eventually, I got tired of the band-aid fixes and had a plumber run a camera down thereβ€”wasn't cheap, but seeing exactly what was causing the issue made it worth it. Ended up having to replace part of the pipe.

One thing I'd add: check your gutters and downspouts too. If they're not directing water far enough away from your foundation, that extra water can overload your drainage system during heavy rains. I extended mine with some cheap plastic tubing from the hardware store and noticed an immediate improvement.

Definitely agree on tackling it sooner rather than later... basement floods are no joke, especially if you've got stuff stored down there. Learned that lesson the hard way myself.

Did extending your downspouts really make that big of a difference? I tried something similar last spring and honestly didn't notice much improvement... maybe my issue's deeper underground. Did you consider installing a sump pump instead? Curious if anyone found that more effective.

Extending the downspouts helped me a bit, but honestly, it wasn't a complete fix. I ended up installing a sump pump last fall, and that made a huge difference. Here's what I did: first, had someone check the grading around my house to ensure water wasn't pooling near the foundation. Then, installed the sump pump in the lowest corner of my basement. Haven't had any backups since, even during heavy rains... Definitely worth considering if your issue seems deeper underground.

Did you have any issues with the sump pump installation itself? I've been thinking about it, but I'm worried about hidden costs popping up... Did you DIY or hire someone? Curious if it's manageable on a tight budget.
