Ever had a label fall off or get smudged, though? I tried the label maker route, but in the basement humidity, some of mine peeled right off after a year.

Tell me about it... I once relabeled my shut-off valves three times before giving up on those cheap stickers. Have you tried writing directly on the pipes with a paint pen? Not the prettiest, but at least it doesn’t peel. I’m always worried someone’s gonna mix up hot and cold in an emergency. Is there a better way that’s still code-safe?

Yeah, those stickers are basically useless in a damp basement. I’ve had them curl up and drop off like autumn leaves… not super helpful when you’re knee-deep in water trying to shut something off. Paint pens work, but I’ve seen folks use colored zip ties or even heat-shrink tubing with printed labels. Not sure if every inspector’s cool with that, but at least it stays put and you can color-code hot vs cold. Anyone ever try those metal tags? They look old-school but seem to last forever.

Metal tags are legit—my uncle’s boiler from the ‘70s still has them dangling. They’re not pretty, but you’ll never lose track of what’s what. Zip ties work too, but I always end up poking myself with the cut ends...
