Totally relate to the stuck valve scenario—been there more times than I'd like to admit. A quick tip I've found helpful:

- Every few months, give your valves a gentle turn back and forth to keep them from seizing up.
- Consider using waterproof markers or engraved tags instead of paper labels—less likely to fade or peel.

But yeah, nothing beats actually knowing your plumbing layout. Saves a lot of headaches when things inevitably go south...

Wish I'd read this sooner... I spent my first plumbing emergency squinting at soggy, unreadable labels. Now I've got engraved tags everywhere—lesson learned the hard way, as usual.

Engraved tags are solid, but have you considered color-coded zip ties as a backup? They're quick to spot even in dim lighting. Though I get it, after

"squinting at soggy, unreadable labels"
you'd probably prefer something foolproof...

Engraved tags definitely sound sturdy, but I like your zip tie idea as a quick visual backup. As someone who just bought a house and is still figuring out the plumbing maze, I've found a combo approach works best for me:

- Engraved tags for detailed info (valve type, date installed, etc.)
- Color-coded zip ties for quick visual reference (hot vs cold, main shut-off vs secondary lines)
- Laminated cheat sheet taped inside the utility closet door with a simple color legend

Honestly, after a late-night leak scare where I was fumbling around with a flashlight and soggy paper labels, I totally get the frustration. Your zip tie suggestion would've saved me some stress that night...

Anyway, sounds like you're already on the right track—good luck getting it all sorted!

Your system sounds pretty solid, especially the laminated cheat sheet—why didn't I think of that earlier? I've been relying on scribbled notes stuck to the wall with painter's tape (classy, right?), and half of them fell off after a humid summer. Did you find it tricky deciding on your color-coding scheme? Knowing me, I'd probably mix them up at 2am and shut off the wrong valve anyway...
