Honestly, I’d push back a bit on tracing every pipe—sometimes that just leads to more confusion, especially in older installs where things don’t match the manual at all.
Not a bad idea, but I usually start by identifying the main shut-off and working outwards. Saves a lot of head-scratching if you hit a weird junction or an old bypass someone added years ago. Manuals help, but real-world layouts can be wild.“I’d recommend tracing each visible pipe back to its source”
Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the manuals not matching up. When we moved in, I tried to follow the diagrams and just ended up more lost. Starting at the main shut-off made things way less overwhelming for me too. There’s always some random pipe that seems to go nowhere... I guess that’s just part of the fun of old houses?
