Yeah, pipe dope's been solid for me too. Tape's cheaper upfront, but after redoing a joint twice last year, I figured the extra few bucks for dope was worth it. Just gotta remember to stir it well before applying—makes a noticeable difference in consistency and sealing. Also, gloves help...stuff sticks to everything.

Totally agree on stirring the pipe dope—makes a huge difference. I've seen plenty of DIYers skip that step and then wonder why they're chasing leaks. Also, don't underestimate the value of a good brush applicator. Those cheap plastic ones tend to shed bristles right into your threads...not fun fishing those out later. Learned that lesson the hard way during an emergency boiler fix last winter.

Good point about the brushes—I switched to a small plumber's flux brush a while back, and it's been way better. Also, don't forget ventilation...that pipe dope smell can linger, and breathing it in isn't exactly healthy. Learned that one the hard way too.

Definitely agree on ventilation, learned that lesson myself after a headache-filled afternoon. Another tip: keep some disposable gloves handy. Pipe dope can be a pain to scrub off your hands, and it tends to get everywhere if you're not careful. Also, found that wrapping threads with just enough tape—too much and fittings won't seat properly—makes the job smoother.

Haha, tell me about it... I swear pipe dope multiplies the second you touch it. Gloves are definitely a lifesaver, but I've switched to a biodegradable version recently—works just as well and makes me feel less guilty about tossing gloves afterward. Also, learned the hard way to double-check connections before tightening everything down. Nothing like finishing up only to realize you've missed one tiny fitting and have to redo half the job.
