Cracked Sink Dilemma: DIY Kit or Professional Fix?
Honestly, epoxy kits are hit or miss with sinks. I've seen a few DIY jobs hold up surprisingly well, but usually that's when the crack is tiny and not in a high-stress spot. If your sink keeps cracking after repairs, it might be flexing too much from underneath - maybe check the support brackets or cabinet structure below? Had a client once who kept patching cracks until we realized the real problem was a loose mount... tightened that up and no more cracks since. Could be worth a look before giving up completely on DIY fixes.
Fair point about checking the brackets, but sometimes epoxy just isn't the best choice for sinks because of constant temperature shifts and water exposure. Have you considered something like fiberglass reinforcement underneath the sink instead? I've had better luck with that personally.
Fiberglass reinforcement isn't a bad idea, but personally I've had better luck with marine-grade epoxy. Regular epoxy definitely struggles with temp swings and moisture, but marine-grade stuff is designed exactly for those conditions. Patched up a hairline crack in my bathroom sink about two years ago, and it's still holding strong - even with kids splashing around like they're training dolphins in there...
Fiberglass can work, sure, but it can be messy and tricky if you're not used to handling it. Plus, the fumes aren't exactly pleasant. Marine epoxy is straightforward enough for DIY without turning your bathroom into a hazmat zone. Just my two cents!
Marine epoxy sounds decent, but how deep was your crack? I've seen hairline cracks hold up well with epoxy too, but for anything bigger or near the drain area, wouldn't fiberglass reinforcement give you more structural support? Epoxy alone might seal it fine, but long-term I'd be worried about flexing and reopening. Just wondering if marine epoxy really holds up as well with deeper or stress-prone cracks...

Yeah, that's exactly my thought too. Marine epoxy is solid stuff, don't get me wrong - I've patched up plenty of hairline cracks with it and they've held up surprisingly well. But once you're dealing with something deeper or near the drain (where there's constant stress and movement), fiberglass reinforcement is usually the safer bet. Seen a few DIY epoxy-only fixes reopen after a year or two... not fun to redo. Better safe than sorry in my book.
