Thermal cameras are handy, but I’ve found they can be a bit misleading if you’re not careful—sometimes a cold spot is just a draft, not a leak.

That’s been my experience too. Thermal cameras are great for a quick scan, but I’ve chased a few “leaks” that turned out to be nothing more than a poorly sealed window. Moisture meters are a lot more direct—if it reads high, you know you’ve got a problem. I keep both on hand, but honestly, the moisture meter gets more use. It’s just less guesswork, especially in older homes where drafts are everywhere.

Never fully trusted thermal cameras for leaks either—too many false alarms from cold air sneaking in somewhere. Moisture meters seem a lot more straightforward, but I wonder, have you ever had one give a false positive? I’ve heard some building materials can throw off the readings...

Yeah, I’ve run into a few weird readings with moisture meters, especially on older plaster walls or anything with metal lath behind it. Here’s what I’ve noticed:

- Some materials (like dense hardwoods or cement board) can definitely give higher readings than expected, even when they’re bone dry.
- If you hit a nail or screw under the surface, that’ll sometimes spike the meter and make you think there’s a leak where there isn’t.
- Humidity in the air can mess with surface readings too—had a meter go off just because the room was muggy after a shower.

I still trust them more than thermal cams for pinpointing leaks, but you kinda have to know your materials and double-check suspicious spots. Had one time where I chased a “leak” for hours before realizing it was just an old patch of plaster that always reads high... not my finest moment. Thermal cams are great for insulation issues, but for water? I’m with you—moisture meters are usually my go-to, just gotta use ‘em with a bit of skepticism.

Had a similar thing happen in one of my rentals—meter kept screaming “leak” behind a bathroom wall. Turned out to be old metal mesh in the plaster, not water. Drove me nuts for hours. Those meters are helpful, but yeah, gotta double-check.

Those meters can be a real pain sometimes.
- Had a buddy who swore his meter was haunted—kept picking up “leaks” that turned out to be nothing but old wiring in the walls.
- It’s wild how much random stuff can set them off.
- Double-checking is key, for sure.
- Honestly, I’d rather chase a false alarm than miss an actual leak, but it’s still frustrating when you’re tearing your hair out at 2 AM over nothing.

Hang in there. Stuff like this happens to everyone sooner or later, especially in older places.
