Had a tenant once who unplugged it to use the outlet for a space heater and forgot to plug it back in. That was a fun January morning.

That’s classic—seems like outlets in crawlspaces are just magnets for trouble. I’ve had similar issues, and honestly, I’m still not sold on plastic valves either. Every time I’ve tried them, they just don’t hold up to the cold snaps. Has anyone actually had one last more than a couple seasons under a house? I keep hearing about push-to-connects too, but I’m skeptical about how they handle all the moisture and temperature swings down there.

Plastic valves just don’t cut it in a crawlspace, especially around here where the temps swing so much. I swapped a bunch out for brass after two winters—too many callbacks. As for push-to-connects, I've seen them hold up alright if you’re careful about prep and keep them clear of direct moisture, but I still prefer good old-fashioned sweat fittings under a house. Less to worry about when things freeze up or get damp.

- Totally with you on the brass. I tried those plastic valves because, well, they were cheap and I was naive. Two freeze-thaw cycles later, I was mopping up at 3 AM.
- Push-to-connects are like fast food—convenient but not always satisfying. I still get nervous every time I crawl under there and see one staring back at me.
- Sweat fittings are a pain to learn, but man, once you get it right, you sleep better. Or at least you’re less likely to wake up to an indoor waterfall...

Brass really does seem to be the gold standard, doesn’t it? I’ve had mixed luck with push-to-connects—never had a full-on failure, but I still get that uneasy feeling when I see them under the sink. Maybe it’s just paranoia. Sweat fittings took me a few tries (and a couple scorched walls), but now I trust them way more. Do you guys bother with pipe insulation, or is that just overkill unless you’re in the far north?

Pipe insulation saved my bacon more than once, and I’m not even up north—just Midwest winters, but that’s enough. Had a burst in a crawlspace at 3 AM a few years back. The pipe was copper, sweated joints, but no insulation. Temp dropped fast that night and, well, you know the rest. Ever since then, I wrap anything that’s even remotely exposed or near an exterior wall. It’s cheap insurance, honestly.

I hear you on push-to-connects. They’re handy in a pinch, but I still get twitchy leaving them behind walls or anywhere I can’t keep an eye on them. Brass and sweat joints just feel more “set it and forget it.” Still, I’ve seen some pretty clean installs with PEX and push-fits that have held up fine... maybe I’m just old school.

Scorched a cabinet bottom once learning to sweat pipes—smelled like burnt plywood for weeks. Live and learn, right?
