Maintenance interval for a slow bathroom sink drain

My bathroom sink still drains, but it’s noticeably slower than it was about six weeks ago. There’s no standing water yet, and I haven’t noticed gurgling or a strong odor. This sink has had hair and soap buildup before, though, and it was professionally cleared once in the past.
I’m trying to decide whether preventive cleaning is worth paying for now or whether periodic DIY maintenance makes more sense while it’s still functioning. My current thought is to remove and clean the stopper, inspect the trap, and use a small hand auger rather than chemical drain cleaner. I’m less certain how often that should be done without disturbing the plumbing unnecessarily.
For a bathroom sink with this gradual slowdown, what maintenance interval would you use? At what point would you pay for professional drain cleaning or request an inspection, especially if the slowdown returns quickly after cleaning? I’d also appreciate guidance on which symptoms, such as recurring odor, gurgling, or a history of repeated hair buildup, suggest there may be a deeper issue rather than routine buildup.

I wouldn’t use a fixed maintenance interval as the main guide. Since it’s already slowing, clean the stopper first, then inspect and clear the trap if needed. A small hand auger is reasonable after that, but I’d avoid making repeated augering or chemical treatments the routine.
The recurrence rate is more useful: if the slowdown returns within a few weeks of a thorough cleaning, that points beyond ordinary stopper hair and soap buildup. At that stage, professional cleaning or an inspection makes more sense, particularly if gurgling, persistent odor, or backup in another fixture appears.
