When should relief-valve discharge from a backflow preventer be checked?

Does a brief discharge from a backflow preventer’s relief valve during a test or pressure change mean anything different from water that keeps dripping or returns during normal use? I’m curious what details are most useful to note, especially whether the discharge stops quickly and whether it coincides with nearby shutoffs or other pressure changes.

For recurring discharge, is it best to contact a certified backflow tester or plumber rather than trying to adjust the device’s internal parts? What would help them tell whether the timing is expected or needs prompt service?
